Tax Notes Magazine Names Tax Policy Center Its 2012 Person of the Year

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Tax Notes, Tax Analysts’ leading publication on federal tax laws, regulations, and policy developments, today announced that the Tax Policy Center has been selected as the magazine’s 2012 Person of the Year.

Each year, Tax Notes highlights the top 10 notable and talented figures in the tax world. This year’s winner is the Tax Policy Center (TPC), a nonprofit organization providing analyses of current and long-term tax issues. The TPC was selected because of its central role in the presidential campaign, after it released a report examining the tax policy proposals of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

The report concluded that Romney’s tax plan could not lower tax rates for middle-income earners while remaining revenue neutral, which became a point of contention in the presidential campaign.

“The TPC released its report during a campaign in which tax policy was front and center, thanks in large part to the fiscal cliff,” the magazine editors noted. “The campaign season was marked by the media’s emphasis on fact checking, and perhaps no purported fact was so influential or controversial as the report’s claim that Romney could not realistically achieve his tax policy goals without adding to the deficit or raising taxes on middle-income earners.”

Others on
Tax Notes’ list of the most influential people in the tax world in 2012 are Mitt Romney, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., Manal Corwin, Tamara Ashford, Erskine Bowles, Scott D. Michel, Dean A. Zerbe, Bryan T. Camp, and Elizabeth A. Copeland.
