Tax Notes Announces a New Columnist
FALLS CHURCH, VA — Tax Analysts' flagship publication, Tax Notes, the longtime industry standard for federal tax news, commentary, and analysis, introduced Bruce Bartlett today as a regular contributor to the magazine. Bartlett's column will focus on a broad spectrum of tax and economic policy.

In his first article, “Taxing Sin: A Win-Win for Everyone?”, he addresses the push to legalize and tax the sale of marijuana in California. He also estimates how much revenue could be raised by a full legalization of drugs in the United States. He concludes that prohibiting nonviolent activities and substances that people will insist on doing or using anyway is an ineffective way to stamp them out and that legalizing them may allow society to keep them within acceptable bounds while raising significant government revenue.

About the Author
Bruce Bartlett is a columnist for The Fiscal Times, an online newspaper covering public finance and personal finance. Bartlett has served on the staffs of Reps. Ron Paul and Jack Kemp and Sens. Roger Jepsen, has been executive director of the Joint Economic Committee of Congress, and was a senior policy analyst in the Reagan White House and deputy assistant secretary for economic policy at the Treasury Department during the George H.W. Bush administration. He is the author of seven books, including the New York Times best seller Impostor: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy (Doubleday, 2006). His latest book is The New American Economy: The Failure of Reaganomics and a New Way Forward (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009).
